The Importance of Staying in Your Own Lane

How often do we look at other people’s lives and compare ourselves? As human beings we have the ability to think that everyone is doing it better than we are. Social Media has certainly played a huge part in this. Life before social media was in some ways much easier as we didn’t have the daily feed of glamourous lifestyles, achievements etc, we receive every minute of every day. The “look at me and all I am doing and how wonderful my life is.”

I was on facetime with a friend last night and we were talking about getting caught up in the whole social media thing and comparing ourselves to others. It is such an unhealthy practice. The phrase ‘staying in your own lane’ was key to our discussion. There is enormous power in ‘staying in your own lane’.

Tips and Knowledge

1.People share only what they want you to see, social media is full of success stories, fun things, excitement, rarely do people post about the negative experiences, their mistakes, mishaps.

2. A huge lesson is life is about trusting your own intuition, your own path. Yes, you can draw inspiration from others but don’t get bogged down in feeling you are not good enough.

3. Realize we all have own talent or genius within. (I am crap at Math, but good at organizing and thinking outside the box). When I was a teacher, I had one child who from one week to the next could not remember the 2 timetables but wow could he draw -he was 10 and when he put pencil to paper, he was a genius.

4. Find Your own Genius? You possibly know what it is - so harvest it.

5. Nurture or Harvest/harness that genius. By doing this you will build your own sense of worth.

6. Take your time. Take care with how much you take on. Build on the foundations and focus on one or two things and not try to conquer the world in a day. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

7. The grass is greener on the other side - When you are comparing yourself with others - take a step back, a deep breath and think about the things you are good at.

8. Time Out. If you are getting too caught up in social media take timeout

9. Prepare to stay away from the phone, TV, and media for the first half hour of the day while you plan your day.

10. Acknowledge that your lane is the right lane for you.
